The Club1st October 2003 - Colin Fitch
Info on how to join, who runs the club, and what we get up to outside
the sports hall...
Heriot-Watt Fencing Club is one of the most successful clubs at the
university (our fencers are regularly highly placed in both student
competitions and opens round the country). We are also a very social club,
and members should expect several great nights out and parties throughout
the year. Some of the stories from nights out after competitions have become
legendary, and in fact it has often been noted that some fencers fight
better with a hangover…
Although we are primarily a student club, all are welcome although
membership fees are a bit higher for non-students.
How To Join
Simply come along to one of the training sessions and ask to join
in! We can provide beginners with all the equipment they need, and the
more experienced fencers in the club will be more than willing to give a
few lessons in the basics to help you get started. Our coach also gives
group lessons, aimed mainly towards the more inexperienced fencers,
which will help you get a hang of things and have a few fights.
In terms of costs, the membership rates per term are £5 for first-time
student members, £10 for returning students, and £15 for non-students.
Competitions and other events may carry extra costs, however the club
tries to keep these to a minimum by booking group accommodation and
transport as necessary.
